Potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃), also known as potash, functions as a key chemical solvent in the Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) process, a well-established technology for removing carbon dioxide from gas streams through chemical absorption. The HPC process has been deployed across more than 700 industrial plants worldwide for natural gas sweetening, ammonia synthesis gas purification, and industrial CO₂ removal, and is now attracting renewed interest as a post-combustion carbon capture solution for hard-to-abate sectors.

The market is experiencing a structural shift as governments, industrial operators, and technology providers accelerate investment in decarbonization infrastructure. Stringent climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, expanding carbon pricing mechanisms, and the growing cost-competitiveness of the HPC process relative to conventional amine-based systems are driving this transition. The HPC process achieves CO₂ capture efficiency of 80–95% and operates at absorber temperatures of 40–120°C and pressures of 20–60 bar, offering flexibility across a range of industrial CO₂ sources while presenting lower toxicity, slower corrosion rates, and simpler regeneration requirements compared to monoethanolamine (MEA)-based alternatives.
