Solvent-free battery technology encompasses a range of manufacturing approaches that eliminate toxic organic solvents, principally N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP), from electrode production. The primary technological paradigm is Dry Battery Electrode (DBE) processing, where active materials, conductive additives, and fibrillizable binders such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are mixed and formed into free-standing electrode films without any liquid solvents.

Solvent-free battery manufacturing eliminates the energy-intensive drying oven stage and the complex NMP recovery and recycling infrastructure required by conventional wet-slurry electrode coating processes. This results in up to 40% reductions in manufacturing energy consumption, up to 30% reductions in factory floor space, and significant reductions in lifecycle CO₂ emissions per battery cell produced. Tesla acquired Maxwell Technologies in 2019 specifically to gain access to dry electrode technology, a move that catalyzed industry-wide interest.
